Barbie Portraits
For a photography project in France, the brief was to do a portrait series, photographing 5 subjects: a relative, a friend, a neighbour, a stranger and a self-portrait. Being away from home became an interesting constraint. I decided to photograph a Barbie doll and then to airbrush the images to resemble my characters. I left the unaltered Barbie doll as the stranger.
While there are various kinds of fashion dolls being made today, it remains true that these dolls over-emphasize beauty. Had mine shared any resemblance with people I know today, they would look this way.
